“Philosophy & Games” — For centuries philosophers have explored the concepts of “game” and “play,” from Friedrich Schiller’s notion of the “play-drive” to Johan Huizinga’s image of “the human as player.” In this presentation we will explore the interplay between philosophy and games in these and other writers, ending with a quick introduction to the contemporary trend known as “object-oriented philosophy.”
Alexander R. Galloway is a writer and programmer. He is creator of the Carnivore and Kriegspiel projects, and author of the book “Gaming: Essays on Algorithmic Culture” (Minnesota, 2006). He teaches media theory at NYU in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication.
The NYU Game Center is housed in the Skirball Center for New Media at the Tisch School of the Arts and is a collaboration between Tisch, NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, and the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. The Center is supported by generous grants from an anonymous donor and the Rockefeller Foundation.
