Plus Game

Plus Game is a speed based arithmetic drill game. I mean, it’s really really fast….Good luck. This Game was written and produced by  Younyil Kim for Professor Perlin’s fall graduate games class. This is the second set of mini games that the class has worked on. UPDATE Nov 14 2009: Plus Game was updated today.

  1. This was fun, especially for a math game. The pace is definitely the best thing. It’s a little hard to keep up, and without a full keyboard with a separate numeric keypad it’s almost too much effort. But I like the silhouettes that rotate through and then the color image shows up. It looks like a slot machine.

The character on the far right is a little confusing. I think you said she was there to give you encouragement, but maybe you could just use the top half of a character without the number, otherwise it seems like that’s part of the math problem.

Also, although the pace is fun, it might be a good idea to start out with something slower and work up to it. The multiplier combo system is very fun and addictive, so perhaps when you get your score to 500, you should advance, and then to 1000 and then 2000. That way, people are advancing levels when they’re getting multiple answers correct in row, so you know they can handle it.

  2. The rapid pace of this game would be so perpect for a typing or keyboard-learning game. For example, we have all of these little devices in our technological lives that have their one keyboards (iphone, blackberry, other-lingual keyboards, etc.) eventually we learn them, but it be nice if there was a motivating game to learn to quickly find all of the keys (without looking, like how your game (incorrectly) assumes we all can type numbers without looking).

The fourth character makes the game confusing, but not withstanding her extra number the information on the menu gives me no indication that I’m going to be playing a math game: “Press the right number on timing”. What does that mean? I understand now (not on my own but after playing in class) that the “right number” is the answer to the math equation presented by the first to numbered girls.

The only reason I knew I could play again by hitting enter is because you said this in class.

  3. Nice game. The animations are pretty good and make the game fun.

It was very difficult to press the correct key on time and almost every time I lost because I was not able to find the key to hit (and not because I could not solve the problem). As mentioned in other comments, the figure on the right side is confusing and I don’t see the point of her holding a random number. One suggestion is to have her hold a timer so the player knows how long (s)he has to press the correct number.

  4. The pace was really exciting and it cried out for sound effects like slot machines or at least falling coin sounds and and giggles and cheers.

Another idea for input is to use a circular menu where the numbers 0-9 are arrange clockwise or counter-clockwise on a circle. This would work for joysticks, or xbox controllers or trackpads, but not as well for mice.

  5. I agree with all the above comments. One other thing though — i felt like i was only doing problems from a very limited pool, and maybe 25% of the time, consecutive problems were the same. So one thing to improve would be the algorithm that generates the problems.

Also, because the game is so intense, a rest period between rounds would be nice. Like say when you switch to subtraction or another operation.

  6. This game is fun. The game is so fast paced, I did not have time to dislike it because it made me do math.

The characters are cute and I like the animation when they appear. It would have been better to start the game at a slower pace and get faster and faster at advanced levels.
