Help!

Help!! is a narrative based (sort of choose your own adventure) game about being stranded in an unfamiliar city with someone who’s sick, and you have choices in how to get help. This game was written by Kai Johnson for Prof. Perlin’s Fall 2009 graduate games course. This is a sketch of a game btw. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! UPDATE 11-18-2009: VERSION 2 has beed added Help is a game about making choices in an imperfect world. Your partner, Ben, has come down with a fever while you two are traveling in a foreign city. Where do you go now? How do you get back home? Improvements: - Art - Cleaned up UI issues - Money and fever now matter for the gameplay - Multiple (2) endings

  1. I want to try all of the interesting paths you have written out. Doing so is tought because it is so hard to restart a game. As far as I can tell I need to relaunch the application.

Text in XNA is mercilessly difficult to control. Often times the text is running over itself and it’s hard to read the narrative.

Sometimes, I’m confused whether Ben, “your friend”, and “your partner” are all the same.

I like that you can’t immediately die or lose, but it’s also — at this stage — very easy to win by guessing. I guess I don’t really feel the effect of my choices good or bad. Artwork and sounds might actually help a great deal with this.

  2. I feel this is an easy game to win, primarily beacause of 2 reasons:
    1. Initial resources too favorable
    2. Too obvious choices

    A great concept nevertheless.

Maybe when the player starts, the cash is limited, but at certain points in the game, intelligent choices have to be made in order to get some extra cash, without making it obvious. I actually found it tricky to think of a sample situation which does this.

  3. After several playing, I’m not sure which one is good or bad end – or the same.

And I could spend more money than I have. The unlimited resources makes game easy but is not attracting.

I hope there are several endings for players who try this game again.

  4. I like the idea of this game. Like Karan suggested, it would be nice to have situations where the player could make some cash too. Maybe they can start with less money to make the game challenging.

The text was kind of hard to read specially in cases where the choice is verbose. I understand its XNA. One thing you could do it make an image of the choices and use that instead of rendering text.

  5. Thanks for the comments, everyone. Indeed, the text on the screen is probably the worst obstacle for this game right now. I’ll be fixing that for sure.

Alec – I’m also going to edit the text. I had a really good outline, but as I wrote the text it became clear I needed to give the person you’re with a name, hence the confusion in nouns and his proper name as the narrative goes on.

I didn’t get a chance to limit your choices if you don’t have the money, or get to a bad ending if your partner gets too sick, so these will all be fixed. Thanks again for the feedback!

  6. I really like the dark mood of the game and the way the choices follow directly from the story. With such limited time, I can see how it was hard to make a more expansive plot, but you have all the ingredients here to build it out and I really feel enticed by what I’ve seen so far.
